My Journey as a Wedding Photographer: From Fear to Passion

Personal, Wedding

I never set out to be a wedding photographer. In fact, at first, the thought of it terrified me. The pressure, the once-in-a-lifetime moments, the responsibility, it all felt too overwhelming. But somehow, through a journey filled with unexpected lessons, I found myself not only loving it but feeling truly honoured to be part of such meaningful days.

Where It All Began

My passion for photography started with a simple but powerful moment. A friend looked at a photo I had taken of her and said, "Wow, I didn’t know I could look this pretty." That sentence stuck with me. From that moment on, my goal wasn’t just to take pictures, it was to make people feel beautiful.

But weddings? Weddings felt like a whole different world. I avoided them at first because I was too stressed about the responsibility of capturing such an important day. Instead, I started working as a photo editor for wedding photographers. Looking back, I realize this was like AI training my brain—I saw thousands of wedding photos, studied what worked, what didn’t, and subconsciously learned exactly what to look for. It was the best possible training ground, and over time, I gained the confidence to start photographing weddings myself.

My First Wedding

In 2013, I shot my very first wedding. I was just 19, nervous, and honestly, a little shy. The hardest part wasn’t the photography itself but finding my “big girl voice” to direct people confidently. But even though I was figuring it all out as I went, I did a good job. And more importantly, I realized how much I loved it.

How I Photograph Weddings Today

Over the years, my style has developed into what I’d call guided-candid photography. I believe in letting moments unfold naturally, but I’ll step in when needed. Whether that’s offering guidance, rearranging a room for the perfect shot, or adjusting details to create a more beautiful scene.

My favourite part of weddings? The genuine emotions. The way a father looks at his daughter before walking her down the aisle, a sibling tearing up during vows, or best friends laughing together on the dance floor—those are the moments I live for. Personal vows are another highlight for me because they let me truly understand my couples and capture their love in its most personal form.

Why This Job Matters So Much to Me

There have been a few times when couples have reached out weeks after their wedding, thanking me for a particular candid photo of a loved one—someone who has since passed away. It’s a heartbreaking but beautiful reminder of how important photography is. These aren’t just pictures; they’re preserved memories.

But beyond that, the best part of my job is when clients keep coming back. When I get to photograph their engagement, their wedding, their maternity photos, their newborns, and then yearly family sessions—it’s the biggest compliment and an honour I don’t take lightly.

What It’s Like to Work With Me

I don’t know if this makes me different, but I always put my couples first. Your needs come before mine. If you need a calm presence when things get chaotic, I’m there. If you need someone to reassure you when the schedule is running late, I got you. If you need me to discreetly capture moments without being in the way, I become a fly on the wall.

I crack jokes all day and match your energy. I want your wedding day to feel relaxed, fun, and full of love—not like a stressful photoshoot.

(And 90% of the time, I start my day with a little Starbucks treat before heading to a wedding. Because, hey, wedding photographers deserve a little “treat yourself” moment too!)

Looking Ahead

My dream is to start photographing more destination weddings and elopements—focusing on quality over quantity. I want to work with couples who truly value my work and connect with me, not just because I’m available or within budget, but because they want me to tell their story.

At the end of the day, all I hope is that my couples walk away feeling amazing—not just about their photos, but about their entire experience. I want them to look at their pictures years from now and feel every emotion from their day all over again.

That’s why I do what I do.
